The clone of Sangiovese Grosso used in the production of both Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino was created at the end of the 19th century by Ferruccio Biondi Santi. The clone was named BS11 and was selected from the estate "Tenuta Greppo".
This very same estate is where the Biondi-Santi Rosso di Montalcino takes shape. The Biondi-Santi name is one of the most important in Italian winemaking history as it represents the father of Brunello di Montalcino. The style of its wines is extremely traditional with amazing aging potential, up to 100 years for the Brunello di Montalcino Riserva.
The 2003 Biondi-Santi Rosso di Montalcino is produced with younger vines and is aged for 12 months in large slavonian oak barrels. The color is a classic garnet, extraction is medium to low, tannins are well integrated and the wine is very mineral on the palate. These are honestly some of the very best wines Italy has to offer. Retail price is $76.
