San Michele is the name of this Arneis Cru produced by Deltetto in the Roero area of Piedmont. This territory is located near the province of Cuneo and it is dominated by sandstone, limestone, clay and sand. The yellowish Astian sand goes back to the middle Pliocene age and is the result of the erosion caused by the deviation of the River Tanaro that created the “Rocche” (deep calanques that are typical of the Roero). Like most other wines coming from this area, this Arneis Cru is full bodied, elegant and very mineral.
On the nose this 2006 Deltetto San Michele Roero Arneis offers rich aromas of green and yellow apple, honeydew melon and a light hint of vanilla and hazelnut. On the palate the wine is elegant, mineral, crisp and complex. The finish is very intense and persistent. 30% of the wine ferments and ages for 6 months in French oak barrels; the remaining 70% ferments in cement and steel vats. I would pair this Arneis with light appetizers, soft cheeses and seafood dishes in general. Retail price is $25. Excellent wine in its category.
