Current trends in Wine Consumption

Posted on 20090907

It is no mistery that the Wine Business continues to grow. We have experienced a marked re-balancing of sales shifting from the On-Premise restaurant business to the Off Premise retail sector in this current recession.

Another clear trend is the strenght of sales of South American wines which tend to offer a great price/quality ratio. Traditional wine-producing countries such as Italy, France and Germany are taking a toll on their share of sales; South Africa's business is falling like a rock.

Imported Malbec consumption is up almost 60% year-over-year, followed by Carmenere, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc.

Looking at trends based on country of origin, we can see that Argentina is the leader in new business; South Africa, France and Italy are losing ground. Remember however that these data are tracking grocery stores sales and not Restaurants.

In the restaurant business, the import segment continues to increase its presence on wine lists especially in major metropolitan areas.
