Puglia is one of the most important wineproducing regions of Italy. Winemaking is an ancient tradition brought by the Greeks thousands of years ago. Puglia is both an high quantity and high quality wine producer. Because of the soil and the very sunny climate most of the vineyards have incredible yields which can reach the tremendous amount of 15 tons per acre. The important fact is that these yields, even though are way bigger than the normal limit "allowed" in order to make fine quality wines, consist in almost only high-quality grapes. In fact Puglia has one the bigger list of Italian DOC wines: Primitivo di Manduria, San Severo, Salice Salentino, Squinzano, Aleatico di Puglia, Rosso Barletta, Rosso Canosa, Moscato di Trani, Castel Del Monte, Ostuni, Brindisi, Gioia Del Colle, Locorotondo, Copertino, Alezio, Moscato Di Trani, Leverano, Lizzano and Martina Franca. The main grapes used are Negroamaro, Primitivo (Zinfandel), Motepulciano D'Abruzzo and Uva Di Troia, but in the several blends of this region is possible to find many grape varieties. The most popular wines of Puglia are Aleatico, a red sweet wine, Primitivo di Manduria which is made with the grape Primitivo (Zinfandel) and Salice Salentino. |
