MARCHE

Marche are located between Emilia Romagna and Abruzzo along the Adriatic Coast. They also shares part of the winemaking tradition with Umbria and Tuscany. Anyway, because of its mild climate, wines from Marche usually have not the fine characteristics given by the harsher and cooler climate of inland areas close to the mountains. Neverthless Marche are known especially for its top quality wine Verdicchio. It is a light to medium-bodied, very fuity white wine often sold in an unique amphora-shaped green bottle. This wine has a DOC appelation for two different areas: Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi and Verdicchio di Matelica. The other two popular wines of Marche are Rosso Conero and Rosso Piceno. Both of them use the Montepulciano grapes aven though the first as a monovarietal and the second together with Sangiovese in a blend.
Rosso Conero comes form the area around Mount Conero which is a beautiful single mountain which has its base directly on the Adriatic sea. The Rosso Piceno comes instead from the southern part of the region, close to Abruzzo. Both this two red wines are full-bodied, rich in aroma and complexity and age very well.
