Bordeaux is one of the most famous wine regions of France and produces by itself one third of the finest wines in the country (AOC, Crus bourgeois, Crus classés). Geographically Bordeaux is in the south west of France close to the Atlantic coast,in the Gironde departement and takes its name from the region's main city, Bordeaux. The climate is usually temperate with high humidity because of the influenceof the near ocean. The wine production in Bordeaux is very ancient: one of the first references has been given by the poet Ausonius which wrote about Bordeaux wines. It is curious that today a château still carry his name: Château Ausone. The vineyards of Bordeaux occupy 120,000 hectares (300,000 acres). Together they form the largest fine wine region in the world: their average annual yield of quality wines is some 850 millions bottles. The best of Bordeaux reds, along with the sweet white Sauternes, are acknnowleged by many as the finest wines in the world. Among Bordeaux wines we can list some very popular names such as Yquem, Margaux, Pétrus, Haut Brion and Cheval Blanc.
It is a characteristic of Bordeaux that the majority of its wines are marketed individually under the name of the Château (which is often a mansion, but may only be a cottage) in which they are grown and produced. In fact Bordeaux has about 7,000 châteaux, 13,000 wine growers and gives to the world 57 different appellations. Looking at the map it will immediately be seen that the region's principal wine-growing areas are carved out by the courses of the rivers Garonne and Dordogne. The left bank of the Garonne takes in the prime wine-growing areas of the Medoc, Graves and Sauternes: the right bank of Dordogne includes the very important areas of Pomerol and St Emilion. The area between these two rivers takes the name of Entre Deux Mers. Finally, north-west of Pomerol and St Emilion there are three less known wine areas: Cotes de Bourg, Cotes de Blaye and Fronsac. All the quality red wines of Bordeaux are made from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. The amount of each grape variety differ with the tradition of the vineyard: therefore the two Cabernet complement each other, giving the wine a richness of colour and flavours, a complex bouquet and good ageig qualities, and the Merlot gives to the blend roundness and suppleness. White wines are made from a combination of Sauvignon Blanc, which gives finesse and acidity, Semillon, which gives softness and sweetness, and sometimes Muscadelle, with its characteristic raisin flavour and smell. Because of the diversity and quality of wines in this region, the wine classification is is quite complex and still refers today to the Universal Exhibition of 1855 in Paris, the "Chambre Syndicale de Courtiers of Bordeaux"  (Professional chamber of wine merchants in Bordeaux) which distinguished 61 high quality wines.
